Curriculum
The pre-school children enjoy a safe and stimulating environment where challenging and appropriate play-based activities reflect their individual needs.
All children are encouraged to develop their independence and self-reliance. However, support and assistance is always at hand. The children learn how to work, play, and co-operate with others through group activities. Sharing and turn taking are important. Discussions of feelings, emotions, and personal values are respected and focused upon. Our young students are helped to understand themselves and others. Good manners are always encouraged.
Language and literature play an important part in our pre-school classrooms. The children are read to daily, and are encouraged to experience books on their own. The books presented to the children change often, and are used to extend classroom activities and projects.
To complement their emerging language skills, Greek Language is taught by specialist teachers. For pre-schoolers, speaking and listening are the main focus of the lessons as they are encouraged to communicate and have fun with language.
The children soon begin counting, recognizing, and writing numbers as they work with many stimulating practical activities. Mental math is practiced throughout these early years, in preparation for the more formal work of adding and subtracting undertaken in Kindergarten. An understanding of space and shape is fostered through the use of a variety of construction equipment and craft projects. Awareness of mathematical language, and simple mathematical ideas are also taught.
We nurture the children’s natural interest in the world around them, and develop their knowledge and understanding of their environment and of other people. We go on various school trips. Festivals are celebrated and parents invited into the class for appropriate discussions and to take part in activities with the children.
There are many opportunities for drawing, painting, and collage work. We encourage them to explore their world through role play and imaginative games. The musical talents of the children are fostered by frequent use of a wide range of instruments and singing. A music specialist takes each class for a weekly music session. The children are encouraged to move and dance in sessions in the gym.
