Greek Studies
The English language incorporates more than 6,000 Greek words. Our knowledge of Greek therefore enhances our knowledge of English (and other European languages).
Up to 50% of scientific terminology comprises words of Greek origin, and A. Fantis alumni who go on to scientific fields of study have the advantage of being able to immediately recognize and understand much of the terminology.
Greek is taught on different levels to cater to the needs and abilities of each child. Each grade is divided into two groups: Greek for Greek-speaking students, and Greek as a second language. Each group receives separate, ability-appropriate instruction from specialist teachers, for whom Greek is a first language.
The Greek Faculty comprises of four teachers, three of whom are at A. Fantis courtesy of the Greek Ministry of Education.
We aim to provide children with the opportunity to develop Greek language skills in speaking, listening, reading, and writing.
In the Pre-school, the aim is to introduce young children to Greek language and culture through games, poetry, dance and song. Students in Pre-K 3 receive three Greek lessons a week, rising to four in Pre-K 4.
In the Lower and Middle Schools, the following levels of teaching are offered:
Greek for Greek-speaking students
Mainly aimed at pupils of Greek descent, the syllabus provides an advanced level of knowledge of the Greek language. Lessons are conducted in Greek, and include curriculum on Greek culture, history and tradition, thus enriching the pupils’ cultural identity.
Greek as a second language
Mainly aimed at pupils who are not of Greek descent, this syllabus enables pupils to acquire and develop the basic language skills necessary for everyday oral and written communication. Lessons are conducted in both English and Greek. Emphasis is also placed on exploring and fostering an appreciation for the Greek culture, history and tradition.
Grades K-2 receive daily instruction; Grades 3-4 six lessons a week; and Grades 5-8 seven lessons a week.
In addition to the opportunity to take the Greek Regents in Grade 8, students who have achieved an appropriate level also take a special examination administered by the Greek government, resulting in an official certificate of Mastery of the Greek Language.
